In this blog, we unravel the intriguing origins of Taekwondo and shed light on its enduring significance, providing valuable insights to parents researching this empowering martial art for their children. The Ancient Roots: Taekwondo traces its roots back over 2,000 years to the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo, where forms of martial arts were practiced for self-defense. Referred to as Subak or Taekkyon, these early arts laid the foundation for the development of Taekwondo as it is known today. The Modern Emergence: General Choi Hong Hi is credited with creating modern Taekwondo by drawing inspiration from ancient Korean martial arts and envisioning a dynamic system that incorporated physical techniques as well as values like self-control, perseverance, and spirit. Seeking to establish Taekwondo as a distinct martial art, General Choi worked to develop its techniques and philosophy in the 1950s and successfully had it officially recognized in 1955. His vision focused on building a comprehensive martial art that balanced physical prowess with moral lessons and an emphasis on personal development. General Choi took on the critical role of propagating Taekwondo worldwide by dedicating himself to organizing and standardizing its instructional programs. Through his driven efforts, Taekwondo rapidly expanded across the globe as he established its foundational techniques and shared its benefits with martial artists internationally. By systematically developing Taekwondo and spreading its teachings, General Choi established it as a premier martial art system practiced by millions around the world today owing to the all-encompassing system and values he instituted. Olympic Recognition and Global Influence: In 1988, Taekwondo made history by becoming an official Olympic sport, marking a seminal moment that brought the martial art widespread global recognition and affirmed its international appeal. This prestigious inclusion in the Olympics served to solidify Taekwondo's standing among the most popular martial arts practiced globally. Taekwondo emphasizes discipline, respect, and physical fitness which has resonated with both children and adults worldwide, contributing to its continued growth in popularity internationally. By securing its position in the Olympics, Taekwondo has since experienced vast participation as people from around the world have taken up the martial art to benefit from its focus on discipline, respect, fitness and its newfound platform on the Olympic stage. The 1988 Olympic inclusion underscored Taekwondo's strength, skill and athleticism at the highest level while worldwide its virtues of discipline, respect and fitness have made it beloved by participants of all ages. Belt Ranking System: One of the aspects that often attract parents to Taekwondo is its structured ranking system, symbolized by colored belts. Starting from white belts, practitioners progress through various levels until they achieve the coveted black belt. This system not only serves as a visual representation of a student's progress but also fosters goal-setting, motivation, and personal growth. Benefits for Children: Taekwondo offers a multitude of benefits for children, making it an enticing activity for parents to consider. Beyond physical fitness, which includes improved coordination, flexibility, and overall strength, Taekwondo also promotes valuable life skills. It instills discipline, self-confidence, focus, and resilience, enhancing character development. Master Adrian is a fantastic teacher and is always willing to help his students become better martial artists. He puts in the work to give his students the best opportunity to succeed, and I think anybody who commits themselves to W1 and Master Adrian will reap the benefits.
My daughter started W1 Taekwondo with a trial class offered for a month. She liked it very much and wanted to go back to the regular class. And yes she never stopped herself from attending W1 Taekwondo class. She gained lots of skills in a very short time. I can see how much confidence she is now! Master Adrian is a very respected person and we can rely on him to build my daughter's Taekwondo skills. Master Adrian focuses not only on Taekwondo skills but also on behavioral skills that are required for a student. All the teachers are wonderful and very friendly. If you are looking for a Taekwondo class for your child this is the place that I can strongly recommend without any hesitation. Thanks and best wishes!
Master Adrian is a dedicated and skilled martial artist, leader, and coach. We enrolled our three kids, ages 5, 6, and 7 this past April and they have come such a long way in skill and in discipline. Master Adrian is both gentle with the kids and tough on them at the same time- the perfect combination for our family. Our kids have learned so much from him, on and off the mat. Master Adrian's whole team is fantastic. Highly recommend!
