Once-A-Year Taekwondo Festival in Portland

Have you wondered what it would be like to have your six-year-old be part of a community tradition?

Imagine your boy in full white Taekwondo uniform milling with other boys and girls in full white Taekwondo attire. Imagine him doing his forms with his friends while people watched. Imagine the smile on his face when he comes to you after a demonstration.

He just owned his new social experience and lived out the values of the community we practice at the Cedar Mill Taekwondo School.

Every year in October, Taekwondo schools around Portland get together to share experiences and exhibitions of skill and character on the mat in front of hundreds of participants who share the same love and path in Taekwondo.

We’ve got children from six to sixteen years old along with their parents and family members, all joining in, supporting and celebrating our passion for this martial art from Korea that has been passed on to us through the association’s founder Chief Grand Master Jay K. Shin.

This year’s Taekwondo Festival will be held at the usual Oregon Convention Center, Exhibit Hall A, 777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd on October 26. It’s on a Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. It’s about half an hour east from our school.

Why Should Your Child Be There?

Your six-year-old is at the period of his formative years where he’ll be looking for his place with other kids. Your little girl is reaching out to connect with new friends, even if a little shy.

It’s a perfect time to bring in mom, dad, siblings to a larger community outside of school into a new and festive environment where your child can just shine.

Your child will be with friends, senior instructors and Taekwondo teachers all representing our Cedar Mill Taekwondo School in the festival.

It’s being part of a larger community from our small community at our school. And all that your kid will see is the sharing of a common art, a common sport and a common value for focus, discipline, hard work and respect emanating through the festivity.

It’s a great instilling of values we’re teaching our kids in our school when we practice Taekwondo on and off the mat, in and out of class.

What’s In The Festival?

The main events will be the demonstration of Taekwondo through six disciplines: the Poomsae (Forms), FreeStyle Poomsae, Breaking (of the board), Para TKD, Weapon form and Sparring.

These disciplines are what we do in class and we get to show what we have learned to an audience who appreciate the efforts every Taekwondo student makes.

The experience will be both communal and competitive. More experienced Taekwondo students will be there to show their level of skill, not just to demonstrate what they know but also to impart the level of quality that everyone aspires to each time a Taekwondo student goes through the class.

There will be adult judges and referees with specific rules of performance and competition.

At the end of the day, there will be the winners of events and the presentation of medals for different categories.

You can find out more about it at this link.

Whether your kid will be performing on the floor or supporting from the sideline, make it a point to be there. The experience will make an impression on your child and his or her motivation to be better. Ultimately, this is the whole point of Taekwondo for our children – to hone their body and their mind through the discipline of their own passion.

A Festival Your Child Can Work Towards

We’ve got about a month and a half before the 2019 NW Martial Arts Festival.

A month and a half are not much when it comes to showing any improvements. It probably takes three, four or five months of almost daily practice before you can actually see something evident.

However, a month and a half are enough to build a connection and familiarity with a routine of discipline on and off the mat, something that’s necessary in order to appreciate the broad unity of common respect and etiquette displayed in every Taekwondo practitioner.

Let this coming regional martial arts festival be a motivating reason for you and your child to aspire for. There’s really no better time to start than today. Our fellow Taekwondo practitioner can be there to assist you.

A month and a half of weekly Taekwondo practice translate into a familiarity with the common terms, addresses, the very basic stretching and routines and the basic techniques of the front kick (Ap-Chagi), back kick (Dwi-Chagi) and sidekick (Yeop-Chagi).

Our School & Class

Here at Cedar Mill Taekwondo School, we value the qualities of focus, discipline and commitment we want to see in our students. We also value respect among each other and towards the instructors. The culture that has been passed on is not limited to the physical art of war but most especially the humility and confidence that comes from learning about oneself in the practice of Taekwondo.

But above all, we value respect and acceptance as described in our motto set above our door as we practice the art of war in order to live in peace with everyone around us.

Cedar Mill Taekwondo School is a diverse cultural community focused on being better through our Taekwondo practice and fun through hard work and sharing of ourselves when we practice together and achieving heights we only dream of.

That is what we mean by the Black Belt Way in our school.
